: a destructive virus disease especially of beets and particularly the sugar beet but also of other plants (as tomato, bean, or squash) that is transmitted in the western United States by the beet leafhopper and causes prompt death in plants affected when young and a curling and puckering of the leaves in plants affected when half grown or older and some necrosis of the phloem in all parts
